Pregnancy and New Mums Yoga Class With Clare Stephen

Price £11 per Class - Drop In and Pay-on-the-Day


This class is open to all pregnant women, from fourteen weeks gestation, and new mums six weeks post delivery, regardless of previous yoga experience.

Yoga can bring tremendous benefits to our experience of pregnancy, childbirth and beyond. The gentle practice of the asanas and breath awareness, improves posture, strength and flexibility and aids deep relaxation.

This can help to alleviate some of the minor ailments of pregnancy. Yoga helps us to trust in our bodies and get in touch with our birth giving instincts. After delivery, yoga will aid recovery and provide welcome opportunities for rest and relaxation.

Clare is a practising midwife, yoga teacher and mother of two.

About Clare :

Clare Stephen 


Throughout my career as a midwife, yoga teacher and mother, yoga has been my constant companion, my refuge. It has sustained me through all the ups and downs of life and I feel passionate about sharing the insights I have gained, particularly with woman on their journey into motherhood.

Yoga allows us to be more at ease in our bodies, to meet life’s challenges with equanimity, to relax deeply and trust our body’s innate wisdom.

I qualified as an Iyengar teacher at introductory level in 1989 and went on to do my junior intermediate training, which I completed in 2005.

I’ve been teaching antenatal yoga since then and I’ve seen how greatly woman can benefit from a regular gentle yoga practice in pregnancy and also in the postnatal period when they are recovering and adjusting to all the changes in their lives.

I remember when my children were small, when sometimes it all felt so overwhelming, stepping onto my yoga mat, was my place of retreat, my island of tranquility, even if it was only to take a few deep breaths and practise a few poses, I’d feel reinvigorated and ready to face the waves!

I’ve been a practising midwife since 1994 and am currently working as a community midwife in Midlothian. I feel privileged to support and care for woman and their families at this most transformative time in their lives.

I came across The Antenatal and Postnatal yoga class run by Clare and Maureen after I'd had my son. I'd practised yoga for a number of years before but never at the Iyengar Centre.
I was especially interested as I wanted to get back into yoga but I was a bit scared as I had had a caesarean and had some abdominal separation following pregnancy. I was immediately impressed by the teachers' experience and knowledge of how bodies change with pregnancy.
Everyone in the class was very friendly and all at different stages of pregnancy. The teachers would suggest alternatives to poses for every stage of pregnancy so that everyone had a class that was right for them. It was a great balance of strengthening and relaxing.
