In 2012, our Guruji, Mr BKS Iyengar, expressed the idea of International Yoga Day in a talk.

Mr Narendra Modi, who is the current Prime Minister of India, and a good friend of Mr Iyengar, then put forward the concept in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly on 27 September 2014.

Since 2015 International Yoga Day has been celebrated annually on 21 June across the world.

The First International Iyengar Yoga Day

Here is what Geetaji wrote in 2015:

"We are all yoga sādhakās and sādhanā is our very breath, our prāna.

The United Nations has declared 21st June as the International Yoga Day, which will be celebrated all over the world.

For us every day is yoga day. However to respect this special day, to respect Guruji, we have thought of a special practice programme for this day.

Many students from across the world approached me to ask if they could have a special sequence of practice for this day… the (summer) solstice.” – Geeta Iyengar"

So here it is, Geetaji’s special sequence for us all.

On the longest day of the year, people around the world practice yoga and follow Geetaji’s sequence.

Isn’t it wonderful how yoga can unite hearts across the world?
