WHAT IS IYENGAR YOGA

Yoga is one of the six ancient philosophical systems of India. It is for both body and mind. It was formulated by ancient yogis, who developed it as a way to use all their inner human resources to live in harmony with themselves and their environment and ultimately attain spiritual liberation, Kaivalya.

Today, the methods of yoga practice and teaching developed by Yogacharya B K S Iyengar are the most widely used in the world. His thorough study, understanding and mastery of yoga are unrivalled in modern times.

Having taught in all five continents, he won worldwide respect and recognition for his achievements and made yoga accessible and relevant to people everywhere, no matter what their physical or mental ability. He was recognised by "Time" magazine as one of the world's most influential people of the twentieth century.

His family continue to teach at his Institute in Pune, India and teachers who follow his method in over 40 countries.

Students at the Edinburgh Centre will learn through a carefully graded and systematic programme of asana (posture) from basics for beginners, through to an advanced level. Pranayama (breath control) is gradually introduced once students have a firm foundation of yoga practice.

Yoga practice both relaxes and energizes the body and mind and brings vitality, flexibility, strength, concentration, self-confidence and mental calm. Iyengar yoga is suitable for all ages and types of people and all levels of fitness.

Practising Iyengar yoga helps you overcome and prevent many stresses, strains, aches and pains. It promotes a firm foundation for health and well-being.
