Beginners Over 55 Class - Wednesdays 10:00 - 11:00

We have recently introduced our new "Beginners Over 55" class, designed specifically for those looking to improve strength, stamina, and flexibility at a comfortable pace. This class is led by the experienced Anne Kilgour, who offers a supportive environment for everyone—whether you're brand new to yoga or prefer to work at a foundational level. All of our "Beginners" classes are open to all, regardless of age or experience, and are ideal for anyone seeking to reconnect with the basics.

In this special class, you'll learn how to build a balanced body through precise, mindful movements and gain the confidence to explore yoga safely and effectively. Long-time yoga practitioner Sandy McGhie recently joined our class and shared his thoughts on returning to the foundations. Here's a glimpse of his experience:

Beginnes Yoga for for 55+

“Imagine doing something for the very first time. It might be daunting, especially if you know very little about it. That’s why beginning at the beginning is so important—and this class does exactly that!

The teacher, Anne Kilgour, starts by guiding you in the most fundamental aspect of yoga: how to sit. You sit on blocks or a blanket, cross-legged, and Anne explains how to align your body—simple, but essential. Every pose is taught with balance in mind. You alternate sides to make sure both are equally stretched, because so many of us are one-sided without realizing it!

Iyengar yoga is precise, and that precision serves a purpose. From the start, alignment is key. The teacher demonstrates each pose, explains how to get into it, hold it, and come out of it safely, then practices with you, offering gentle adjustments as needed. This is not just a yoga class—it's proper tuition on how to do Iyengar yoga.

In each class, you’ll practice a variety of poses, like the seated postures where you raise your clasped hands overhead, standing poses like Trikonasana (Triangle Pose), and others using props like blocks, bricks, or straps. These props help you learn the correct form and get the most out of each pose.

And, as with all Iyengar classes, we end with ‘Savasana’, or ‘Corpse Pose’—lying on your back, relaxing, and soaking in the benefits of what you’ve just practiced. It’s the perfect end to a fulfilling class.

This is just the start of a wonderful journey—one that I can already tell will be enriching and empowering.”
